The Mythical Lens

So, back in December of 2023 my wonderful wife bought me a Canon RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM Lens - well, she pre-ordered it. This is code for we'll take your money now and ship you the product when it arrives all the wile making interest off your cash.

Beautiful, isn't it!

After around 200 days of "waiting for restock" and not receiving the lens, I decided to cancel the order. I think I'll just wait until they are more commonplace before getting one. Who knows, maybe Canon will make an 'L' version of that lens and this one will become even easier to get. Sometimes I think it's not real since I haven't seen a physical one at all! I'm joking of course, but it is frustrating that it's so hard to find - well, at least for me.

In the mean time, my Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary Lens (EF mount) lens ran into problems focusing and would even fail to change apature. Basically useless to me. I was thinking having it repaired. I still have my Canon 800mm f/11 Prime. It's not bad, it's just f/11 and minimum focus distances have caused me issues when I was doing back-yard photography. So, I decided to take the plunge on another Sigma lens.

This time I chose the Sigma 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 Sport lens. Ok, so it's EF mount, and is a lens is from 5 year old technology, but I'm happy with it. There is a nice new one but Canon hasn't given Sigma the go-ahead to build this version for RF mirrorless cameras - sigh.

As far as this lens goes, it works pretty well. It's super heavy since it's built like a tank which seems to be how the Sports line is for Sigma. This now gives me much greater flexibility as far as it being a few stops faster and is an actual zoom lens.

So far, I haven't had a chance to do it much. The weather has been cruel for me in that it's great during the days that I'm working (my non-pohotography job) and then inclement on the weekends. There are some good weekends coming up so I'm hopeful. I will post some pictures in this blog of pictures I've taken with the new lens. That way anyone reading this can get an idea what this camera can do on a Canon Mirrorless.
